Hotwife vs. Swinging: What’s the Difference?

When Carlos and I started exploring outside the traditional boundaries of marriage, we weren’t sitting around trying to figure out what label belonged on us.

Hotwife Dallas Stone known online as DaddysCowgirl with her husband Carlos in a hotel room

We weren’t asking, “Are we swingers now?” or “Does this make me a hotwife?”

We were figuring out what we enjoyed.

Over time, though, we realized that having a name for what we were doing could be useful—especially when talking to other people in the lifestyle. And one of the questions we still see all the time is:

What’s the difference between hotwifing and swinging?

They can overlap, and every couple has their own rules, but they aren’t necessarily the same thing.

What Is Swinging?

Swinging generally involves a couple consensually exploring sexual experiences with other people.

That might mean meeting another couple, attending lifestyle events, or having experiences together or separately. For some couples, both partners participate. For others, the boundaries look completely different.

The important part isn't one particular set of rules.

It's that both people know what's happening and have agreed to it.

That's also why simply calling swinging “cheating with permission” misses something important. Cheating involves breaking the agreements of your relationship. Consensual non-monogamy involves creating different agreements together.

What Is a Hotwife Relationship?

Hotwifing usually has a different focus.

In a hotwife relationship, a married woman or committed female partner is free to have consensual experiences with other men, with her partner's knowledge and approval.

Sometimes her husband is there.

Sometimes he isn't.

Sometimes hearing about what happened afterward is part of the excitement. Other couples prefer sharing the experience together.

There isn't one universal hotwife rulebook.

We've already written more about this in What Is a Hotwife Relationship?, because the dynamic can be much more about the relationship than people initially assume.

For Carlos and me, that has certainly been true.

Hotwife vs. Swinging: What’s the Actual Difference?

Hotwife vs swinging, the easiest distinction is probably this:

Swinging tends to focus on both partners exploring with other people, while hotwifing tends to focus primarily on the wife exploring with other men.

But real relationships aren't always that neat.

A couple could consider themselves swingers and occasionally explore a hotwife dynamic.

A hotwife couple could attend swinger events.

Someone could begin in the swinging world and eventually discover that the hotwife dynamic is what they actually enjoy most.

That's why I wouldn't get too hung up on finding the perfect label.

Labels help us explain things.

They shouldn't dictate our relationships.

We Didn’t Start by Picking a Lifestyle

This is one of the biggest things Carlos and I have learned.

We didn't begin with a rulebook and decide we needed to follow everything associated with a particular lifestyle.

We started with our relationship.

There were conversations.

There was curiosity.

There were fantasies.

There were boundaries that needed to be figured out.

And there were things we couldn't really know until we experienced them together.

That journey eventually became a much bigger part of our lives, but it happened over time.

Looking back, I'm glad we approached it that way.

Instead of asking what hotwives or swingers were “supposed” to do, we could ask a much more important question:

Does this work for us?

Does the Husband Have to Participate?

No.

This is another place where hotwifing and swinging can feel different.

In many swinging situations, the expectation is that both partners are actively involved in some way. With hotwifing, the husband's involvement can vary dramatically.

He might be present.

He might help choose who his wife meets.

He might enjoy knowing she's going out while he stays home.

He might simply enjoy hearing about the experience afterward.

For some couples, the husband's excitement about his wife's freedom is one of the things that makes the dynamic appealing in the first place.

That doesn't mean every husband experiences it identically.

Carlos and I had to discover what worked for Carlos and Dallas, not what worked for strangers on the internet.

Is Hotwifing the Same as Cuckolding?

Not necessarily.

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions around the hotwife lifestyle.

People often use hotwife and cuckold interchangeably online, but they can describe very different relationship dynamics.

Cuckolding can involve additional psychological or role-play elements that aren't automatically part of hotwifing.

A husband can love seeing his wife desired by other men without identifying as a cuckold.

A woman can identify as a hotwife without her husband wanting any kind of cuckold dynamic.

And, yes, some couples enjoy both.

Again, the labels describe the relationship.

The relationship doesn't have to conform to the label.

We'll get much deeper into the difference between hotwifing and cuckolding in another story because that topic deserves more than a couple of paragraphs.

What About Jealousy?

This is where the fantasy meets reality.

It's easy to talk about sharing your partner when it's hypothetical.

Real emotions can be considerably more complicated.

Jealousy doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong. Excitement doesn't mean jealousy can never happen either. People can experience several emotions at the same time.

That's why communication matters so much.

Carlos and I have been together long enough to know that saying what you're actually feeling is much more useful than pretending you're supposed to feel a certain way because of the lifestyle you've chosen.

And communication doesn't end once you've agreed to something.

You talk beforehand.

You check in.

You talk afterward.

You learn.

Then sometimes you change the rules.

That's part of why we wrote We Didn't Start With a Rulebook: How We Built Our Hotwife Relationship. Our boundaries weren't handed to us by somebody else. They developed through our experiences together.

Which One Are We?

If you're asking whether Carlos and I consider our relationship closer to swinging or hotwifing, hotwife describes us much better.

But even that word doesn't tell you our whole story.

Our relationship has evolved over the years.

We've met people.

We've travelled.

We've had great experiences and awkward ones.

We've learned what excites us and what doesn't.

We've changed our minds.

And somewhere along the way, something that started as a private part of our relationship became part of the story people now know as Dallas and Carlos.

That's actually one of the reasons we're building DaddysCowgirlTV this way.

There are plenty of places online where you can find definitions of these terms.

Here, we want to talk about what living them has actually been like for us.

Hotwife or Swinger: Which Is Right for You?

You don't have to decide immediately.

If you're exploring consensual non-monogamy with your partner, I'd spend less time worrying about what you're called and more time talking about what you actually want.

What sounds exciting?

What makes either of you uncomfortable?

Would you want to experience something together or separately?

What happens if somebody changes their mind?

What are your boundaries?

And perhaps most importantly:

Can you talk openly about all of this before anything actually happens?

Those answers will tell you much more about what might work for your relationship than choosing between “hotwife” and “swinger” ever will.

Our Story Is a Lot Bigger Than the Label

Today, calling me a hotwife makes sense.

But that one word doesn't explain Carlos and me.

It doesn't explain how we got here, the conversations we've had, the experiences that changed us, the mistakes we've made, the places we've travelled, or the stories we've collected along the way.

That's the part we're going to keep sharing here.

If you're new to our story, read What Is a Hotwife Relationship? for a deeper introduction to the lifestyle, then read We Didn't Start With a Rulebook to see how Carlos and I began figuring out what our own version of it would look like.

Because there's a big difference between knowing what a hotwife is...

and knowing our story.
