If you've heard the term "hotwife" online, you might have wondered what it actually means.

Is it swinging? An open relationship? A fantasy? Does the husband participate? Doesn't somebody get jealous?

The simplest answer is that a hotwife relationship is generally one in which a married or committed woman is free to have experiences with other men with the knowledge and consent of her partner.

But that definition doesn't really explain what it's like to actually live it.

We're Dallas and Carlos, a married couple who have been exploring this lifestyle together for years. And for us, being a hotwife couple has always been about much more than what happens with another person.

It's about what happens between us.

So, what is a hotwife?

"Hotwife" is a term commonly used for a married or committed woman who, with her partner's knowledge and consent, is able to explore experiences with other men.

Exactly what that looks like can vary enormously from one couple to another.

For some couples, it might remain a fantasy they enjoy talking about together.

Others may explore flirting or dating.

Some couples explore experiences together, while others are comfortable with the wife having experiences independently.

There isn't one universal set of rules that makes a couple a "real" hotwife couple.

That's actually one of the first things we've learned from living this lifestyle:

The relationship has to belong to the people in it.

What works for somebody else's marriage doesn't automatically work for ours.

Is hotwifing the same thing as swinging?

Not necessarily.

There's certainly overlap between hotwife relationships, swinging and other forms of consensual non-monogamy, but the dynamics can be different.

Swinging often involves both partners having experiences with other people or couples.

In a hotwife dynamic, the focus is generally on the wife's experiences with other men and the role that those experiences play within the couple's relationship.

Even that description, though, only gets you so far.

Labels can help people find communities and understand concepts, but real relationships tend to be considerably messier and more individual than a definition on the internet.

We've never believed that finding a label means you suddenly receive a rulebook.

How does it work in our marriage?

For us, the foundation has always been Dallas and Carlos first.

That's important.

Someone looking at our life from the outside might naturally focus on the unusual part: Dallas meeting other men.

  • We tend to see something different.

  • We see all the conversations before an experience.

  • We see the excitement.

  • We see the planning.

  • We see the boundaries we've developed.

  • We see the conversations afterward.

  • We see the stories we've accumulated together.

And sometimes we look back at something from years ago and realize that we'd handle it completely differently today.

That's part of being married for a long time.

It's also part of exploring a lifestyle together for a long time.

You learn.

Communication matters more than the fantasy

The fantasy version of the hotwife lifestyle is easy.

Real life involves two actual human beings.

That means feelings, schedules, expectations, insecurities, excitement, misunderstandings and occasionally changing your mind.

We've had to learn how to talk about what each of us actually wants rather than what we think we're supposed to want.

We've also learned that one conversation isn't enough.

Something that felt comfortable several years ago isn't automatically what feels right today. Boundaries can evolve. Interests can evolve. People evolve.

So we talk.

Before.

After.

And sometimes a lot in between.

For us, communication isn't something that gets the lifestyle out of the way so the fun can begin.

Communication is part of the lifestyle.

What about jealousy?

This is probably one of the most obvious questions people have.

Yes, jealousy can exist.

Being in a consensually non-monogamous relationship doesn't magically remove normal human emotions.

What matters is what you do with them.

For us, jealousy has been something to understand rather than something we're supposed to pretend doesn't exist.

Sometimes an uncomfortable feeling tells you something.

Maybe a boundary wasn't clear.

Maybe somebody needs reassurance.

Maybe expectations were different.

Maybe something that sounded exciting as a fantasy feels different when it becomes real.

Those conversations have taught us a lot about ourselves and about each other.

And after years of experiences, we still don't believe we've reached some magical level where communication is no longer necessary.

If anything, experience has taught us the opposite.

Boundaries don't make the lifestyle less exciting

When people first become curious about hotwifing or other forms of consensual non-monogamy, "rules" and "boundaries" can sound restrictive.

We've come to see them differently.

Knowing where both people stand can create the trust necessary to explore in the first place.

And boundaries don't have to remain frozen forever.

Some become more relaxed.

Some become more important. New ones appear because of things you've learned. Others disappear because they no longer serve a purpose.

The important part isn't copying another couple's list.

It's understanding why a boundary exists in your own relationship.

It's not a competition with the husband

This is another misconception we've encountered.

If Dallas is interested in another man, what does that say about Carlos?

For us, it doesn't mean Carlos is being replaced.

The entire experience exists inside a relationship we've built together.

That's one of the differences between looking at this lifestyle from the outside and actually living it as a couple.

Another person doesn't have to diminish what exists between us.

Our marriage isn't valuable because we've eliminated every possible attraction to everybody else.

It's valuable because of what Dallas and Carlos have built together.

The lifestyle became part of our story

When we first started exploring, we couldn't have known where all of this would eventually lead.

There have been experiences that became favourite memories.

There have been awkward moments.

There have been things that sounded better in theory than they worked in practice.

There have been trips, hotel rooms, conversations, friendships, adventures and stories that still make us laugh.

And eventually those experiences became part of something much larger: DaddysCowgirl.

That's one of the reasons DaddysCowgirlTV exists.

There are plenty of places online where you can find definitions of alternative relationships.

We want this to be somewhere you can hear from two people who actually live one.

Not because we think our marriage is a blueprint for anyone else's.

It isn't.

But after years of doing this together, we've accumulated a lot of stories—and learned quite a few things along the way.

Is a hotwife relationship right for every couple?

Definitely not. And that's okay.

Something being exciting to one couple doesn't mean it belongs in another couple's relationship.

If you're curious about the lifestyle, we'd suggest starting with conversations rather than actions.

What actually interests you about it?

What interests your partner?

What scares either of you?

Are you both genuinely interested, or is one person agreeing because they're afraid of disappointing the other?

What would make either person uncomfortable?

Those questions are much more important than trying to figure out how other couples do it.

Because if there's one thing our experiences have taught us, it's this:

There isn't one correct way to build a relationship like ours.

There's only the version that Dallas and Carlos have figured out together.

And we're still figuring it out.

This is only the beginning of our story

Our hotwife relationship didn't appear overnight.

There was a beginning.

There were first conversations, first experiences, changing boundaries, unexpected emotions and plenty of lessons we could only have learned by living them.

Over time, those experiences helped shape our marriage—and eventually the world that became DaddysCowgirl.

Here on DaddysCowgirlTV, we're going to tell those stories.

If you're new here, start with our story and meet Dallas and Carlos.

And if you're already wondering about the question almost everyone eventually asks us—what about jealousy?—we'll be talking about that too.

Because explaining what a hotwife relationship is takes a few paragraphs.

Explaining what it's actually been like to live one?

That's going to take a lot more stories.
